Update as of February 2, 2019
There has been a lot of movement of the paperwork variety going on behind the scenes here in headquarters. Our team continues to manage and oversee the contract with Big Trees, Inc. and is looped in with all the communications between them and the District and also FORMA, which is the construction company building the new Blakely. We still don’t have a date for the exciting diggy-dirt that will be happening, but we do want to let you know that’s it’s all going down during Mid-Winter Break, which is February 18 through February 24. We will post the schedule once we get it from the company. If and when there is an opportunity to have a viewing party of the tree being lifted to its new spot, we will definitely let you know.
Our fundraising is now complete. We are thrilled to announce we have raised $19,512.50.This includes the 5K match from the most generous Miller family, who have a 3rd grader at Blakely now. Special thanks to the Millers for their above-and-beyond generosity! Our most current bid from our Big Trees, Inc. is a total of $17,284.80.
In addition to the cost of moving the tree, there will also be incidentals related to its care, including a delivery of compost from TILZ, an automatic timer, and sprinklers to keep the tree adequately watered throughout the growing season. The tree will need consistent monitoring by our team, which is led by internationally renowned plant pathologist, Dr. Olaf Ribeiro. We expect to be able to cover our expenses with very little extra.
After the expenses of tree care are tallied, any additional funds left over will be returned to Blakely Elementary, as our total includes a $2,500 donation from Mr. Ande’s principal discretionary funds. He will direct the remainder of those funds elsewhere if they are not required. Thank you again to ALL our donors who made this possible. We will continue to update you as this project is underway.
Please check out this media coverage, fresh off the presses at the Kitsap Sun, too. Expect to see an article in the Bainbridge Islander newspaper in the coming weeks.
Our very best,
The Friends of the Blakely Elementary Japanese Maple
